-Nipple thrush on the mother and oral thrush in the baby can be as a result of antibiotic therapy. If you or your baby have any of the following signs or symptoms seek advice from your doctor, lactation consultant, midwife or CAYH nurse.
-The symptoms of nipple thrush in the mother are burning or itching sensations on your nipples between breastfeeds, shooting pains going into the breast or a cracked nipple that is not healing despite good positioning and attachment.
-The signs your baby may have oral thrush is white spots in the mouth. Your baby may also be irritable whilst feeding as thrush can make swallowing painful.
-Treatment is a simple process of applying an antifungal gel which can be purchased over the counter at pharmacies. Apply to your baby's mouth and your nipples/areola after each breastfeed. Even when the signs and symptoms appear to be resolved it is important to continue treatment for two weeks.
-If your baby is using a pacifier then it is important to boil it for five minutes each day.
